Foggy's day of Brit frustration
30 March 2010
Carl spent a rare day in front of the television on Sunday cheering on the Brits at the second round of the World Superbike championship at Portimao.
Foggy is due to appear on Eurosport at the end of April as a guest pundit for the Assen races, and was doing his homework to check out the latest form.
And, while he found the racing exciting, the Brits left him feeling frustrated at the results.
He said: "Leon Haslam is going very well. I was willing him on past Biaggi but that Aprilia is quick. Leon's bike is not slow, though, and works well in the corners. He has surprised a lot of people, even myself, this year. But he has been around a long time, even though he has not dominated a championship before. I hope he goes on to win it as the Haslams are great motorcycle racing family and his dad was a bit of a hero of mine when I was 14.
"I was frustrated for Johnny Rea. His bike doesn't seem quick enough and then he broke down. I still think he is the most talented and quickest of the lot, but everyone needs the right package. Leon Camier's lap times towards the end were good enough for a podium but he needs to do better in the first four or five laps, and it's hard to know how good Shakey's bike is. Certainly Checa's is struggling for speed, as he was the quickest through the corners but couldn't even stay in the slipstream.
"James Toseland had two finishes, which is something to build on after his recent crashes. But his qualifiying position left so much to do that he was never going to challenge at the front, much like the two fatory Ducatis.
"And it was good to see Cal on the rostrum. After being on pole he probably thought he could win it the first race, which was why he pushed that little bit too hard.
"All in all it was really good racing, with so many people capable of winning races - more than I can remember for a long while."
